Most of us constantly struggle with the concept of a purpose. “What is it that drives me? What am I passionate about?” For some, these are easy questions to answer. For others, it’s a lifelong search.
However, I’m of the philosophy that doing, regardless of what, so long as it’s not malevolent, is the true purpose. We must do, for if we don’t, we are nothing.
Mow your lawn. Kiss your wife. Budget your month. Make art. Cook a meal. Take a walk. Work a job you don’t enjoy, because the act of doing it in and of itself will satisfy your purpose. And if you really must enjoy it, go find another job, or better yet, find a hobby.
We are not simply cogs in a machine. We have choice. We are all individual parts of a larger organism. A larger being, that depends on us to do, not idle. Every job is important, because it gives a person an opportunity to do.
Turn off your TV. Turn off your phone and your computer, and go do something. Do it with awareness. Do it conscientiously. Do it with kindness. Do it with empathy.
Now, go do something, like write. Or sleep. But do not idle.
