Those roly pollies and spiders<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wetness and worms<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and beetles and pungent scent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the tearful ground that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

fascinated me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ran around barefoot without you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I was happy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other side didn\u2019t matter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, turn after turn,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you wedged yourself in, and became<\/p>\n\n\n\n

part of the routine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ritual<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breathtaking<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sleepless<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So focused, so blinded<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until one hot sunny day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that outdoor rug had weathered,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like your hair<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like your coarse skin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it lost its glamour<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it needed to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I began to peel it off the cold concrete,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ever so slowly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because despite knowing what I\u2019d uncover in the shadow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t really want to see it<\/p>\n\n\n\n
